トライアスロンは、今年で20年になるので、皆生トライアスロンに出たのは、丁度10年経った頃、五島アイアンマン・ジャパンに出た翌年だったと記憶している。当時まだ月刊誌だったトライアスロン・ジャパンに、毎年皆生のバイクコースが、ジェットコースターとして紹介され、「灼熱の皆生」の名を欲しいままにしていた。たった一人で申込み、宿は皆生つるやに指定された。大きな部屋に女性4人部屋で、そこから6年間、部屋仲間で毎年皆生で会うようになった。最後に出たのは、30回記念大会で、来年は40回大会らしいので、かれこれ10年が経っている。今年は皆生つるやで申込みをしたものの、満員で申し込めず、前日の土曜日、一言挨拶を、とフロントで女将を呼んでもらった。ハガキで参加を知らせていたので、「どうして（リストに）名前がないのかと思った。ハガキ書こうと思ってたのよ」と、手を取って離さない。お茶でも飲んで行って、と同行の友達も呼んで、しばしコーヒータイムとなる。つるやは、女将のお母さん、大女将が皆生温泉女将連合会の会長だった人で、今も健在。女将の娘さんも、現在女将修行中だという。10年前は、中山のエイドでボランティアもしてくれていた。懐かしさでいっぱいのひとときを過ごして、「絶対に入っていってね」と二日分の温泉入浴券と、レース当日食べるように梅干しのお菓子まで持たせてくれた。皆生の人の温かさが、皆生トライアスロンの魅力でもある。
